Reminiscent of a Frost poem, this image evokes sentiments of perils and promise, hardships and hope. Traveling through Titus Canyon in Death Valley, a twenty-six mile stretch cutting through the Grapevine Mountains, one learns to appreciate the terse relationship of man and nature. The observer is closed in by the impassable, sheer rock walls, and has no choice but to take the beaten path of dust and stones. While the shadows of the mountains provide refuge from the hot desert sun, the solitary plants testify to the fragile temperamental character of these beautiful but deadly waste lands. But at the edge of the canyon, the sunlight just around the corner anticipates the possibilities of what might happen at the end of the road.
