In many cultures the lotus is a sacred symbol of beauty and fertility. In this image, the striking brilliance of the lotus’’ white petals are set against the ebony background. From this contrast, the observer’s vision instinctively draws closer to see the subtle tones displayed in the soft texture of the petals. The downward slope of the petals caresses the eye into the center of the flower, where the definition of the pistil and surrounding stamens is acutely seen and experienced. Every night the petals will close around this life-giving ovule to protect its sanctity. Then, they will slowly re-open at dawn to greet the warmth of the morning sunlight. The lotus completes this cycle only twice. After just two days of life the lotus flower will die and disburse its seeds in expectation of creating future blossoms.
