The rugged grandeur of the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument is brought to light in this image. The evening sun dances off of the faces of the rock formations, highlighting the detail of the rock by alternating light and shadow. The white Rimrocks, towering above, are artistically accented with a band of red sandstone. It is out of this red sandstone that nature gingerly carved “The Toadstool,” the phenomenal hoodoo dominating the right side of the image. Over thousands of years, this hoodoo was meticulously formed by rain water melting away the surrounding rock until The Toadstool stood isolated, to proclaim its lordship uncontested. Ironically, by the same forces that created it, The Toadstool will be destroyed. Water will eventually weather down the magnificent rock formation, and it will remain only as a memory.
