Layers of pattern, color and texture make this simple image unexpectedly complex. The colored layers within the broken sedimentary rock slope downward from left to right, whilst the weathered grooves ascend upward. This crisscross of the lines simultaneously balances and unrests the image. The eyes cannot decide which line to follow or in which direction to move. As the lines extend beyond the edge of the image, they hint that the outside world is much grander than the world contained within.
